Project Description

The 21st century is changing the dynamics of the teaching and learning that is taking place in our classrooms. With access to technology and information at our fingertips our students need to learn more than facts. Students today need to use the facts as they build their critical thinking skills and apply their knowledge and skill at a global level. With this grant proposal I plan to show how the introduction of technology along with effective pedagogy and rich content can help address the issue of communication practice and assessment in the world language classroom when faced with large class sizes, limited face time, and limited resources. Currently, I teach classes with 28-35 students that meet for 55 minutes a day. Next year, our school is transitioning from a 6-hour day to a 7-hour day. This change will mean that teachers will now teach 6 classes instead of 5 each day with each class period meeting for 45 minutes. Even with mediated classrooms, our technology resources are limited as we share two computer labs and one mobile computer lab. By integrating technology, students will be able to use the target language with their peers, their teacher, and with native speakers outside of the classroom with ease.

As technology, pedagogy, and content are combined, I hope to see students develop a deep understanding and appreciation of world languages and cultures. It is important for students to realize that they are not just learning a world language to fulfill a credit requirement, but rather learn the importance of knowing a world language and that they are building skills to communicate on a global level.
