Transformation in Learning

Communication, both in written and spoken language is one of the principal goals in teaching a world language. In order to build communication skills and a strong knowledge base, it is necessary to practice in real world contexts as much as possible. As a French teacher, I hope to instill in my students a deep understanding and appreciation of French language and culture. I would also like students to realize that learning a world language is not just a requirement to fill but it is an important skill to have as we are connected globally through technology. The ability to speak more than one language and the knowledge of other cultures and customs opens a world of endless opportunities.The use of web tools such as Voicethread and Skype, will not only serve as a tool to practice and assess written and oral communication, but it will allow students, teachers, administrators, and parents track progress and growth throughout the course of language study. This is especially important today when so much emphasis is placed on standardized testing and the use of data to drive instruction in our classroom and schools.

In agreement with the vision of the Michigan World Language Standards & Benchmarks, I too, want students to become proficient not only in English but in at least one other language. Communication and languages are at the heart of the human experience and now students have the the opportunity to connect and experience another way of life outside of their own while contributing to the diverse societies that surround us at the same time utilizing 21st century skills.
